Midtown Classic.

June 17, 2011

There’s going to be a meet at my home gym, Midtown Strength and Conditioning, tomorrow.  If you’re in Norcal, it might be worth checking out.  Glenn Pendlay is bringing The whole Cal Strength crew plus several guests who are excellent lifters.  This team always puts on quite the show at local meets, so I think it would be worth the trip.  On top of that, we have full sessions.  You will see lifters across all skill levels (plus you will get to see my biceps).

"Oh, these? Don't you worry about these."

This week has been a pretty terrible week of training, but after that cryotherapy treatment yesterday, I was able to hit 130/170 for my 2nd workout.  If I’m feeling “on” tomorrow, I’ll open at 140/170.

HERE is the info.

Do you have what it f**king takes!?

The Trap Cut.

June 15, 2011

(This is a post for anyone who wants to look like they’ve put on about 15lbs. of muscle in about 5 to 10 minutes.)

If you’ve ever been inside a high school weight room, you have seen the trap cut T-shirt (or what used to be a T-shirt).  This is, in my opinion, the single best shirt alteration one could make to enhance one’s physique while getting huge.  What it does is it draws the eyes outward directly to the shoulder girdle, which is now partially exposed enough to see the slope of the trapezius above the clavicle line, which visually adds roughly 15lbs. of imaginary muscle.  The real trick is what I have labeled the “drape” effect.  This is the distance between the trap and the material of the shirt resting on the shoulders.  The greater the distance, the more yoked you will appear.  Observe.

This is what I would call a perfectly cut Trap shirt.  A common misconception among gym goers is that “more is better” so often you are left with the “nipples exposed” trap cut or the “double cape” which is basically 2 halves of a shirt tied together.  The point is to draw the eye to the traps.  If you put the whole thing out there, then you leave nothing to the imagination.  Remember, it is easy to take off too much!  Take off the sleeves with the initial cut then try it on and decide if/where you need to even things out.

I would recommend wearing your trap cut anywhere you want to look like you mean business:

-An interview (This is a no-brainer).

-Casual Friday (everyone else looks like they came to party and you look like you’re about to do WORK.  Instant. Promotion).

-While shopping (so no one will ask you any questions).

-While cooking (because everyone will want to eat what the big guy eats).

-A first date (also a no-brainer).

Things to say while wearing your trap cut:

-“Bro, you’re all up in my trapesphere.”

-Refer to yourself as the “air trapic controller.”

-And of course . . .

Do you have a favorite trap cut?

Where is the most inappropriate place you have worn a trap cut?

Toof Brush.

I experimented by using a tooth brush. It was fun.

Also, NPR is streaming Bon Iver’s new album.  You can listen HERE if you’re into that sort of thing.

Better than Yesterday.

June 11, 2011

I got my 1st 400lbs. clean (182kg.)  It felt amazing.  I can only imagine how good it’s going to feel when I actually get the jerk.  I also clean and jerked 175 for a PR.

Supersize me.

June 9, 2011

I just registered as a Super (105+) for nationals.  But I’m no stranger to the fat game.  I’ve actually been fat for most of my life.  I broke the 200lbs mark by the time I was in 7th grade (I was probably about 5’5 at the time).   By the time I was 17 I weighed a whopping 270lbs.  And this was before I got into serious lifting.  That was 270 of straight cheese.  But now I got some muscles too, so it’s cool.

(I would provide pictures, but I have none.)

This is a dramatization of myself as a toddler.

I actually decided to go full-fat mode about a month back.  My team needed a Super-Heavyweight to Score team points for nationals and I happened to be the biggest one.  I put on about 10lbs in 2 weeks.  How?  I started bench pressing once a week, creatine and pancakes.  EZPZ.

No biggie.  I bet you I can drop down to 225 within a month after Nationals.

Current weight: 246lbs. of brown thunder.

Power snatch and clean workout.  I’ll update if I PR.

Suit Up.

June 8, 2011

It’s hot in California.  You know what that means? Singlet season.  Champions work out in their singlets every day.  And I want to be a champion, so I don the singlet.  It’s like that old saying goes, “Don’t dress for the job that you have, dress for the job that you want.”  If I wanted to be a doctor, I would wear a lab coat and stethoscope.  If I wanted to be a business man, I would wear a tie and carry a briefcase.  If I wanted to work in construction, I would wear boots, tool belt, and carry a power drill.  Naturally, if I wanted to be all 3, then I would wear all these articles of clothing at the same time.

Singlets let the world know that, “Oh no sir, I don’t lift weights, I’m a weightlifter.”  So be proud.  Wear your singlet.  Half up, Baggy T-shirt over, T-shirt underneath, make it your own.  And if your friends give you grief, tell them that you are too busy being elite.

Classic Edition.

This workout was kind of frustrating.

Snatch, hangsnatch: worked up to 120, missed the hang snatch at 130. went back down and up to 120 again.

Clean and jerk: singled up to 140.  Cleaned 150 3 times but missed the jerk.

Squat: 190 for a very heavy single. (I know, right?)

Glute/ham raises.

Even more frustrating.

Snatch: singled up to 120, missing 130. Went back up again for doubles with the same result.

Clean and jerk: Knees hurt too bad so I did pulls up to 180.

Glute/ham raises.

(I’m not posting yesterdays workouts because they were garbage.  The only notable thing I did was a few sets of pulls at 170.  And I NEVER do pulls, so you can guess how shitty I was feeling.)

Power Snatch: 110.

Power clean: 120×3, 130×2, 140×1.  I took 140 again but instead did a “Mega-Clark.”

Light Press.

Singlet Saturday.

June 4, 2011

I was off my game yesterday, so I had an extra rage bonus for today.  I leveled up in both anger and endurance for almost PRing after heavy volume in squats.

Squats:  sets of 5 all the way up to 190, 210(PR), then I hit 220 for 4.  I should be good for 5 next time I try it.

Snatch:  singled up to 140, then missed 145.

Clean and jerks:  singled up to 160.  Cleaned 170, missed the jerk.  Cleaned 175 and missed the jerk.

I missed 150 over 10 consecutive times yesterday morning.  But I would consider it a victory because I Clean and jerked it pretty easily that night.  I’m headed to Cal Strength tomorrow to train.  Let’s see what I can do.
