My new guy, Jason finishes up a long 6 weeks of front squats only to hit his 2nd meet in two weeks.  After which, he’ll hop right on the front squat wagon to PR City.  What the heck did he get himself into?

Myself, Lindsay and Jason are actually in his hometown for a small meet tomorrow.  Wish us luck!

Here’s some sweet training footage of one of my new guys.  Jason is a big 94kg lifter and will probably eventually fill out the 105kg class.  He already has a 120 snatch and a 156 clean and jerk with a current front squat max of 160.  Seeing as how he just front squatted 160 for 2×2 on Monday, I’m pretty sure we’ll be looking for some PR’s in the near future.

I’m well aware that a large percentage of my readers come from the 70’s big community.  But I think that it’s appropriate to echo this lesson from Justin because I think it’s an important one (for any of my readers that aren’t also readers of 70’s big).

HERE is a great read from Justin in which he discusses the importance of consistency VS. sexiness.  He was referring to post workout nutrition but these principles can be applied to anything.

For example:

BCAA’s are sexy.

But how important are they for the average client looking to improve body composition through a strength and conditioning program?

Is it more important for the trainee to get 8 hours of sleep every night, eat a nutrient rich, balanced diet, and learn time tested training principles? Or is it more important to spend $50+ a month on intra-workout aminos?

I myself choose a product called, “Surge Workout Fuel” when I know my workouts will last over an hour.  However, I’m also a person that trains an average of 9 times per week over the course of a year, consistently eats enough to support my athletic habits and is willing to hurt a few feelings to make sure I get enough time to myself to recover.

Just sayin’.

Club Swole II.

It’s that time of the year again.  My team needs money.  We need it so we can continue traveling to National meets and flourish.

Boom.  Bingo night.

Boom. Bingo night.

Here’s a quick word from my boss, Tara Getty.  She’s been nothing but supportive of my efforts with the barbell club and is a major contributor to the weightlifting community that we’ve built at my home gym, Midtown Strength and Conditioning.

We want to have fun.  But what we are doing is serious.

The Midtown Barbell Club has become a force in the world of the Pacific Weightlifting Association (PWA) and as such we need to show our strength around the country.  Which takes money.  Money we wish grew on trees.

Coach Claridad and I sat down and we concurred that $7,000 would keep the Club moving for a year.  Moving around the Country. 

Last year, with Club Swole funds we went to Ohio twice, Southern California, we made sweet t’shirts and we paid the entry fees for our lifters at local meets.  But we want more.  We don’t want economics to get in the way of our potential.

We want to have fun.  So, we present Club Swole: Black and White Bingo.  Yes, I said Bingo.  We will play Bingo with a Super Trainer at the helm and we will drink and we will spend our hard earned dollars on that and our Silent Auction.

We are not a Non-Profit Organization.  But we are badass.  I’m sorry you won’t get a tax write off but you will get a lot of photos and videos of our guys and gals kicking ass.

Last year we had a casino, this year we have Bingo.  Which means much less out of pocket for us. 

We are not poor.  We are hungry.  But it’s expensive.  We want to represent at all the National Meets we can.

So, please come to Club Swole: Black and White Bingo.  We have a Paypal account set-up.  We want your support and we want you to have fun.

God knows we all work hard….

Here’s more footage of me hopping in with the ST guys.  Let me tell you, it was a pretty short session for me.  I could hang for a little bit until they started throwing on 25kg. plates like it was candy.  All things being said, it’s good for me to step outside of my comfort zone every now and then and work on a few things that have always been a weak point.  It’s not like I would ever program reverse band deadlifts into my team’s program but gaining a little more knowledge and strength will carryover to me personally as a lifter and a coach.  Plus I’m having fun.

For those of you new to the strength game, comparing Olympic lifting to powerlifting is like comparing apples to oranges or football to basketball.  I could go on in length about why but I’m sure there’s already a plethora of literature out there on the subject, so I’ll just leave you with a little nugget of knowledge I picked up at school.  Strength is both speed and mode specific.

Here’s me trying to hang with the cool kids.  I told everyone who competed at Nationals to throttle back for the next 2 weeks or so.  I want our minds right for the 16 weeks leading up to the American Open.  Go ride a bike.  Swim.  Do a push-up.  I don’t care.  Meanwhile, I’m still working at the gym all day so I decided to hop in with the team ST guys to kill my whole face with some deadlifts.  Honestly, after hurting my back this most recent time, I’ve lost a lot of strength and confidence from the floor.  I never truly got it back even after I got my 180 clean and jerk.  As Mark always says, strength is never a weakness.  Weightlifting coaches can go back and forth all day on the cost vs. benefits of deadlifts but in my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with throttling back on the lifts and working on general strength at certain points throughout the year.

My best ever deadlift is 240kg. I got 535lbs here and I hit 505lbs for a double yesterday.  Most importantly, I’m having fun and giving my mind a break from pushing the lifts for a couple weeks.
