Feel good or BE good.

September 28, 2015

One thing that I can objectively say is helping all my lifters across the board is the mandatory prep and corrective exercises I now include within our training schedule. I’m not going to list any of my favorite exercises because I feel like they deserve their own blog post.  But as a general rule of thumb, uncovering your weaknesses and including work to correct them VS. doing what feels good or what feels most rewarding is one of the main differences between training for sport and training like a bro.  Right now the team is transitioning from building a healthy foundation towards building absolute strength.

Those 4x6 squat feels.

Those 4×6 squat feels.

Maxing out feels good.  Snatches feel good.  Bro-ing out and working hard feels good.  having a system in place that at least has the foresight to look from now to a few months from now does NOT necessarily feel good.

Right now we’re on track to peak at the American Open.  I should be taking a good sized group with me and the whole gang is stoked that it’s taking place right in our backyard.

Trust the process.

Without Passion.

September 24, 2015

A man I used to look up to once told me this:

“Without passion, I am nothing.”

I overheard a man I looked up to say that.  I was around 19 at the time and it was at a weightlifting meet at Sac High.

Caffeine and Kilos 2015 Video.

September 21, 2015

So this is like far less creative than my videos from this contest over the last few years but I’m like . . . busy being a business man and stuff.

Compare this to how fat I was 2 years ago.

I think I was like 265ish lbs in this video.  Oh and that Gil Scott Heron song is still one of my favorites.

Shit, I mean even compare that to last year.  This is the SAME BELT from all the videos.  I’m currently on the very last hole of an ELITEFTS medium and in these videos I’m in hole 3 or 4.

Also, any video with an appearance from my good friend Alex “The General” Lee is going to be one of my favorites.  He’s like a guardian angel, only coming into my life when I need him the most.

I had many a LOL while making this video.  Queen and pained grimaces of high reps squats go together like peas and carrots.  I know.  I need help.

The eventful months keep on rollin’ over here with no signs of slowing down.  I should really just hang my hammock in the lair to save myself some time.

The thank you’s are all sincere though.  We are the product of ALL our efforts.  I consider myself extremely fortunate to finally get to live out the dream.  Together, we’re going to make this thing great.

Invisible Oranges put up a soundcloud link to Serial Hawk’s new full length coming out tomorrow, “Searching for light.”  Seeing them play in a small venue was one of my favorite performances of 2014 and they are still currently one of my favorite bands in the genre;  A genre in which bands often succumb to the tried and true methods of everybody else.  These guys are like a breath of really fresh and really heavy air. The album drops tomorrow.

Seriously.  Live though.  The tone, man.  The tone.

When I send my lifters detailed instructions on the prep work that we do before workouts, I also like to troll them by inserting superfluous bicep flexes and bro shakas.

It's the little things.

It’s the little things in life.

Is it the weekend yet? Oh wait.

Is it the weekend yet? Oh wait. Photo by Zander.

It’s all worth it though.  The amount of support I’ve received lately has made my heart overflow.  All I want to do is put in more work to make this thing great.

Coming soon:

-New Occam video documenting the past few weeks and the meet this past weekend.

-Myself and a few others will compete this Saturday at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational.

Bro-ing Out.

September 7, 2015

There is a difference between training for weightlifting competitions and ignorantly throwing weights above your head like a bro.  There’s nothing wrong with one or the other, I just want people to know the difference.

Bro'ing out.

Bro’ing out.

I’ve decided to lift at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational which is the weekend of the 19th.  It’s honestly one of my favorite meets of the year to compete in.  It’s just that the timing is a little awkward since I haven’t really been doing full-time training for lifting since I got back from Nationals.  I’ve been working on my weaknesses and building up my base for the AO like Im supposed to.  I just decided to take a nice little BRO-detour so I can BRO out with my BRO’s at the C&K meet.

If you’re in the area, check out the new spot.  We’ve been doing some major renovations and I’m excited to show it off.

Actual Pain Labor Day Sale.

September 4, 2015

Actual Pain is having their annual Labor day sale this weekend.  40% off, homie.

Hit ’em up so you can dress straight up villainous this winter.

All the Volume.

September 2, 2015

The team and I are finishing up a high volume cycle focused on correcting muscular imbalances, increasing fitness and giving us a proper base going into the American Open.  As far as my own training goes, it’s been getting increasingly difficult to get back into the swing of training after a big meet.  Emotionally it takes a bigger toll than it used to.  Today was actually the first % based workout that I was able to hang with the rest of the team.
