I remember MY first beer.

October 25, 2015

I actually do though and it’s a mildly funny story told in person.

I was actually talking about this.

Jean tasted his first rainbow on Friday with this 160kg clean.

Jean tasted his first rainbow on Friday with this 160kg clean.

And you know what? It looked easy.  I gave him a hit of salts (also a first).  He threw on some Radiohead (I’m so proud) and that shit flew off the ground FAST.  Good thing I caught it in slow-mo.

Also notable is one of our young guys hit like 9 PR’s on Friday.  And this was after I let him know the night before that none of the lifters we watch on “Unbelievable Bulgarians” are actually natty.  I know. So young.

I guess the theme of this post is that I’m surrounded by youth and their radiant optimism.  It keeps me getting after the big boy weights, searching for that 1-2% I have left in the tank.

Thanks, guys and girls.

Feel good or BE good.

September 28, 2015

One thing that I can objectively say is helping all my lifters across the board is the mandatory prep and corrective exercises I now include within our training schedule. I’m not going to list any of my favorite exercises because I feel like they deserve their own blog post.  But as a general rule of thumb, uncovering your weaknesses and including work to correct them VS. doing what feels good or what feels most rewarding is one of the main differences between training for sport and training like a bro.  Right now the team is transitioning from building a healthy foundation towards building absolute strength.

Those 4x6 squat feels.

Those 4×6 squat feels.

Maxing out feels good.  Snatches feel good.  Bro-ing out and working hard feels good.  having a system in place that at least has the foresight to look from now to a few months from now does NOT necessarily feel good.

Right now we’re on track to peak at the American Open.  I should be taking a good sized group with me and the whole gang is stoked that it’s taking place right in our backyard.

Trust the process.

Without Passion.

September 24, 2015

A man I used to look up to once told me this:

“Without passion, I am nothing.”

I overheard a man I looked up to say that.  I was around 19 at the time and it was at a weightlifting meet at Sac High.

When I send my lifters detailed instructions on the prep work that we do before workouts, I also like to troll them by inserting superfluous bicep flexes and bro shakas.

It's the little things.

It’s the little things in life.

Is it the weekend yet? Oh wait.

It’s all worth it though.  The amount of support I’ve received lately has made my heart overflow.  All I want to do is put in more work to make this thing great.

Coming soon:

-New Occam video documenting the past few weeks and the meet this past weekend.

-Myself and a few others will compete this Saturday at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational.

Bro-ing Out.

September 7, 2015

There is a difference between training for weightlifting competitions and ignorantly throwing weights above your head like a bro.  There’s nothing wrong with one or the other, I just want people to know the difference.

Bro'ing out.

Bro’ing out.

I’ve decided to lift at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational which is the weekend of the 19th.  It’s honestly one of my favorite meets of the year to compete in.  It’s just that the timing is a little awkward since I haven’t really been doing full-time training for lifting since I got back from Nationals.  I’ve been working on my weaknesses and building up my base for the AO like Im supposed to.  I just decided to take a nice little BRO-detour so I can BRO out with my BRO’s at the C&K meet.

Bro.

Also.

If you’re in the area, check out the new spot.  We’ve been doing some major renovations and I’m excited to show it off.

All the Volume.

September 2, 2015

The team and I are finishing up a high volume cycle focused on correcting muscular imbalances, increasing fitness and giving us a proper base going into the American Open.  As far as my own training goes, it’s been getting increasingly difficult to get back into the swing of training after a big meet.  Emotionally it takes a bigger toll than it used to.  Today was actually the first % based workout that I was able to hang with the rest of the team.

Home.

Home.

And for good reason.  He makes us look GOOOOOOD.

I’ll post video this week as well as some updates.

The team competed yesterday for the first time under the new name, new gym, new life.  Jake took first and Emelie took second overall by sinclair.  Jen took a shot at the AO total.  Alexa and Conor competed in their first meets.  Zander closed in on his goal of breaking the master’s American record clean and jerk for his category.  Sammi hit the AO total at a different weight class.  Paige, Katie, Heather H and Yezmin got out there and represented well.  It was an overall success.  And it wouldn’t have happened without the rest of the team there to support.  I taught a number of my people yesterday how to count attempts and help in the warm-up area.  It ended up being a beautiful symphony of communication.  Thank you Heather, Deb, Alexa, Nick, Paige, and even you, Nile. Together we made it happen.

I’ve got more to say.  But for now, pictures.  Then rest.

The lair is cleared. Thank you to Amadeo and the CSP crew for making this a priority.

The lair is built. The beginning. We have 5 platforms but will have 6 by the end of the week. I'll be buying Werksan bars from here on out.
